Manage Diabetes Through Diet

As you can see on the left-hand column, we are selling diabetes products. However, simply changing your diet -- and reducing your calories -- can go a long way in improving your condition. Perhaps, so much so that your reliance on expensive products and medication can be drastically cut. More importantly, let's not forget equally drastic improvements in health -- think of how much better you will feel!

What diet program is best for my condition?

The number one criteria for a health-improving diet is that it be low in calories, high in nutrients. Skip the casseroles and choose fresh, green salads or steamed veggies. Make sure you eat plenty of low-fat protein (egg whites, soy or tofu, whey, lean chicken or turkey and fish), and skim (low- or non-fat) dairy products. And you need fat -- yup to better control insulin and blood sugar. Choose heart-healthy monounsaturated fats: raw unsalted almonds, hazelnuts or use guacamole or avocados.

Don't eat:

  • Processed foods -- this includes most TV dinners, pudding cups, etc.
  • Potato chips, pretzels, candy, donuts, cakes, cookies, white or refined breads, ice cream (choose fresh fruit instead)
  • Fast food (unless you choose the salad bar and skinless chicken or turkey, egg whites or low fat cottage cheese)
  • Crisco, butter or lard (use olive or canola oil; for "butter" use one of the new "No Trans Fat" varieties of margarine)
