A Necessary Tool for Almost Any Project
An important, easy-to-use, and cheap tool for any home is the level. Whether you're doing something as basic as hanging a picture (with a level you won't be asking, "is it straight yet?") or more complex like building a deck (without using one your barbecue might just roll away), use a level to check the true horizontal plane (called level) and true vertical plane (called plumb).
Carpenter's levels are 18 to 48 inches long; a popular size is the 24 incher that combines convenience with enough length for accuracy. Torpedo levels are shorter (9 inches at most) and fit in tight spots and reach into corners of walls or cabinets. Newer torpedo models also have a magnetic edge so you can stick the level to a steel shelve or appliance (like washing machines and refrigerators) and use both hands to make the adjustments.
